Breakage and glazing
Broken Window & Glass Replacement
Two problems at once: a hole in the building and glass where people walk. They get solved in that order, and you can check every part of how we do it.

Don't take our word for it
Six things we say, and how to verify each one
Glazing is simple work, which means every claim about it is easy to check.
| What we say | How to check it yourself |
|---|---|
| The frame almost never needs replacing | Look at the frame once the glass is out. If the timber is firm and the rebate is sound, there is nothing wrong with it. A broken pane is a glass problem. |
| Glass is cut to your opening | Measure the pane and ring a supplier. Stock sizes exist; the chance of one matching a Missouri window built in 1915 is close to nil. |
| Some cracks are genuinely stable | Mark the ends of the crack with a pencil tick and look again in a fortnight. A mid-pane crack that has not travelled is not an emergency, and we will tell you that rather than sell you urgency. |
| Safety glazing is a requirement, not an upsell | Look at the location — beside a door, in a bathroom, at a low sill. Those positions call for tempered glass, and any existing pane there should carry a small etched mark in a corner. |
| The sash usually needs work too after an impact | Run a finger along the rails and check the latch. Split timber and a forced keeper are common after a break-in, and new glass in a damaged sash is not a repaired window. |
| You can get a second quote without insulting anybody | Do. We do not sell replacement windows, so a competing quote costs us nothing to sit beside. |
Five minutes, no tools
Four checks worth making yourself
Quick, safe and genuinely useful before you call anybody.
Test 01
Find where the crack starts
At an edge means it will travel, because the edge carries the stress and the seal. Mid-pane with no impact point is usually thermal and often stable.
Test 02
Look for an etched mark in the corner
Tempered glass carries a small permanent stamp. If it is there, you need tempered going back in, and anyone proposing ordinary glass is cutting a corner.
Test 03
Check whether one pane or two broke
On a double-glazed window, if the inner pane is intact and the outer is cracked, the unit has still failed as a whole and gets replaced as one item.
Test 04
Walk the whole elevation
Especially after hail or wind. Breakage rarely happens to one window, and finding the rest now saves three more call-outs.
On the day
What we demonstrate before we leave
Five things you can see for yourself at the end of the job.
The rebate completely cleared of old glass and bedding, not glazed over.
The glass type that went in, and why that one for this location.
A continuous bed with no gaps, because air pockets behind glazing are where the next failure starts.
The sash operating and locking exactly as it did before the pane broke.
Every piece of old glass and material taken away with us.
In writing
What you get on paper
Four things on every estimate and every invoice, without being asked.
A named component
The estimate says which part failed — a cord, a balance, a keeper, a roller, a closer. Not 'window needs work'. If a quote will not name the part, it has not diagnosed anything.
A fixed price, before we start
Agreed in writing, and it does not move once we are working. If we think we might find rot or hidden damage, you get a price for both outcomes up front.
What we did not do, and why
Anything we looked at and left alone is listed, with the reason. That is how you know we checked it rather than missed it.
Paperwork an insurer can use
Itemised, dated and photographed where relevant, formatted to submit without anybody rewriting it.
Missouri conditions
How windows break in Missouri
Hail first, then storms, then everything ordinary.
Hail, and plenty of it
Missouri is in one of the more active hail corridors in the country. A single storm can crack, pit and chip glass across an entire side of a house, and the panes that survived can still have lost their seals.
Severe storms and straight-line wind
Wind-driven debris damage reaches every part of the state and tends to take more than one opening. We check the whole elevation rather than the window you called about.
Thermal stress in a wide-swinging climate
Sun on part of a pane with the rest shaded by a frame, a porch or a neighbouring brick wall creates enough differential expansion to split glass on its own. In St Louis brick streets with partial shade this is more common than people expect.
Winter makes an open opening urgent
Missouri gets genuinely cold snaps. A broken window in January is heat pouring out and, on an exterior wall, a real risk to plumbing. Securing the same visit is the actual service.
Questions
Breakage questions
Can you replace the glass the same day?
Rarely, and we would rather say so. Glass is cut to your opening. What we can always do the same day is clear it and close the building.
What does securing actually involve?
Clearing the broken glass, removing loose fragments from the sash, and boarding or filming the opening so it is weathertight and secure.
Only one pane of my double-glazed window broke.
The window still looks closed, but the sealed unit has failed as a whole and is replaced as one item.
My window cracked and nothing hit it.
Thermal stress, almost certainly. Sun across a partly shaded pane is a common cause here and it is not something you did.
Hail came through. What should I look for?
Pitting, chips and cracks from a strike point — then watch for fogging over the following months, which means a seal took the hit even though the pane held.
Will you provide paperwork for a claim?
Yes — written, itemised quotes and invoices formatted to submit without rewriting.
